PowerPoint Basics
Starting PowerPoint:
Go to “Start.”
Go to “Programs.”
Go to “Microsoft Office.”
Go to “Microsoft PowerPoint
2003.”
There are designer templates
available, but they are for every slide.
Adding a new slide:
There are four ways to add a new slide:
Click on “New Slide” button on
the “Common Tasks” toolbar.
Click on the icon on the
toolbar that looks like a slide with a star.
On the menu bar click on
“Insert” and pull down to “New Slide.”
Use the keyboard shortcut
“CTRL” and “M.”
The “Content Layouts” dialog box will appear.
Saving PowerPoint:
Save often (after each created slide) so you won’t lose too much
information in case of a computer failure.
Go to “File.”
Go to “Save as.”
Save on to your space. If you don’t, all will be lost.
Importing a document onto
PowerPoint:
This step can enable you to import, let’s say Inspiration 6 onto a PPT
slide.
Minimize your PowerPoint
document.
Open your document (i.e.
Inspiration).
Click on “CTRL “ and “A” to capture all objects (i.e. ovals and pictures).
Right click on the item and
scroll down to “Copy.”
Bring your PowerPoint document
back.
Go to “Edit” and “Paste.”
To increase size of document grab one of the
corner boxes & drag.
Note: Background from the document
does not copy onto PowerPoint.
Note: One problem when pasting onto
PowerPoint is the text might be too small.
Text size can’t be changed on a pasted document so change the text
before copying and pasting.
Adding background to your
PowerPoint slide:
Go to the Menu toolbar and
click on “Format.”
Scroll down to “Background.”
There is a box that says
“Background Fill.” The lower part has a
pull down arrow. Click on the
arrow. You will see boxes of colors. Choose one of those OR click on “More Colors”
for more choices. “Fill Effects” is
another option to experiment with later.
Moving to a previous slide:
Click the upper double-arrow
button in the lower right corner of the PowerPoint window. The previous slide will appear.
To move to the next slide
click the lower double-arrow button on the lower right corner of the PowerPoint
window.
To see all of your slides at
once click on “View” on the menu bar.
Click on
“Slide Sorter.”
Note: You can move slides around by clicking and dragging.
Putting images into your
PowerPoint:
Your PowerPoint will be
minimized and you most likely will be searching for images on the web.
Right click on the image.
Choose “Copy Image.” Note:
Remember to cite your image.
Note: You should save your image to your space just in case you lose
your PowerPoint inadvertently. Saving to
your space will reduce the size of the image (in kilobytes).
Maximize your PowerPoint
slide.
Click on the slide.
Choose “Edit” from the menu
bar.
Scroll down to “Paste.”
You can also go to “Insert” on
the menu bar to insert PowerPoint “Clip Art” or images from your file.
Scroll down to “Picture.”
Choose either “Clip Art” or
“From File.”
