Program Descriptions

Hearing Impaired
This is an instructional program for students who have mild to severe hearing impairments. The classroom utilizes small instructional groupings that focus on the development of speech and language as well as academic readiness skills. The students all wear amplification equipment to utilize their residual hearing and to develop listening skills. Speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and social work are all available to students according to their individual needs. Students are mainstreamed into general education programs as appropriate.

Autism
Emphasis: An instructional program designed for students challenged with autism spectrum disorders. Students may have secondary disabilities, as well. The classroom is a small structured setting that employs a variety of techniques identified as best practices in the education of students with autism including, discrete trial, PECS (picture communication exchange system), sensory balance activities, and systematic social skills training. The students are provided with intensive educational experiences to assist them to learn needed language, social behavioral, academic and self-help skills across a variety of settings. Related services are integrated into the classroom activities, with direct and/or consultative services provided as appropriate. Students spend more than 50% of their school day in this specialized instructional program. Students are mainstreamed with general education students as their needs permit.

Emotional Disturbance

The classroom is a small structured setting that employs a variety of positive systems that aid students in successfully managing their social and academic functioning. Intervention techniques are designed to help the student gain increased self-esteem and, therefore, an increased motivation to learn. Related services are generally integrated into the classroom activities with direct and/or consultative services provided, as appropriate. Students spend more than 50% of their day in this specialized instructional program. They are mainstreamed with general education students, as their individual needs permit.

Emotional Disturbance - New Directions
Emphasis:  New Directions is a school for students whose primary needs are emotional/behavioral in nature. Focus is on academic and behavioral assessment of the student and subsequent development of appropriate intervention techniques. These intervention techniques are designed to help the student gain increased self-esteem and, therefore, an increased motivation to learn. The goal of the program is to help each student gain a better understanding of him/herself. The staff works with the students to help his/her coping skills and techniques which will enable them to function successfully when they achieve mainstream placement within their home school environment and when they transition to the community.

Cross Categorical

The classroom is a small structured setting that employs a variety of positive systems and educational strategies that aid students in successfully managing their social, prevocational, and academic functioning. Related services are generally integrated into the classroom milieu, but are also provided on a direct or consultative basis as appropriate. Students spend more than 50% of their school day in this specialized instructional program. Students are mainstreamed with general education students, as their individual needs permit.

Cross Categorical – Vocational Instruction Program (VIP)
Emphasis: 
A cross-categorical instructional program designed to work with students who have mild autism, traumatic brain injury and/or Mild to Moderate cognitive deficit. Some of the students also have physical impairments. The skill level of the students varies. The classroom is a small setting that focuses on functional academics, functional community living, vocational skills and social skills. Students needs are addressed in the community and on the job, as well as the classroom. Related services are generally integrated into the classroom milieu, but are also provided on a direct or consultative basis as appropriate. Students spend more than 50% of their school day in this specialized instructional program. Students are mainstreamed with general education students, as their individual needs permit.

Mental Retardation – Vocational Academic Development (VAD)
Emphasis: 
The VAD Work Studies Program is directed toward providing a comprehensive and relevant program for high school students. The curriculum emphasizes the development of functional academics pertaining to: vocational, social, and independent living skills. The curriculum is implemented in a variety of settings including the classroom, vocational sites, and the community. Students needs are addressed in the community and on the job, as well as the classroom. Related services are generally integrated into the classroom activities with direct and/or consultative services provided as appropriate. Students are mainstreamed with general education students, as their individual needs permit.

Transition Level Programs -  Ages 19-21
Emphasis:   The SAIL Program is based at Elgin Community College and is a transitional program for young adults aged 19-21, and focuses on providing support to these young adults as they transition to adult life. SAIL students are expected to move about the campus independently and must demonstrate behavior which allows them to be effectively integrated into mainstream environments. Each student in the SAIL Program has a job or is a job-training site supported by MVSEC staff. The students also receive functional instruction in life skills, basic consumer economics, food preparation, social skills, computer, and communication skills. Students can also enroll in ECC classes and in Adult Basic Education classes after passing a placement test. The students attend these classes independently. The ultimate goal of this program is to help the students make a successful transition to work and adult living.

Options
Emphasis:
The Options Program is designed to meet the educational needs for special education students who are juniors or seniors in high school, severely behind in the number of credits needed to graduate, and will benefit from a small structured independent learning environment. Options students work independently on textbook work, video courses, and computer-based programs that are relevant to their home school requirements. The program not only consists of academic studies, but vocational, guidance, and social skill improvement. A social worker meets individually and in group sessions for social skills, career, and transition planning.

Safe Schools
Emphasis:
The safe Schools Program funded by a grant from the Illinois Board of Education. Safe Schools is a "learning lab" in which students work independently on computer based programs, video courses, and textbook work relevant to their home school requirements. The program not only consists of academic studies but vocational guidance and social skill improvement. Students receive social work intervention as needed. The students are made eligible for this program through their District Board of Education in lieu of expulsion.
