LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER

April

Dear Fox Ridge families;

As you may know, our school district has organized a community engagement process under the leadership of our superintendent, Dr. Donald Schlomann, and a large contingent of community members. The D303 Summit meetings have been held monthly at the Charlestowne Mall from 7-9 p.m. Meetings have covered a wide range of topics from changing demographics to a review of building facilities. The topic of facilities is one that will also be addressed at the building level on May 8th. Fox Ridge will host community members, parents and staff to meet the professional architects and school planners as they present site specific findings for Fox Ridge. These presentations will include extensive information including the

top priorities for improvement, the building’s strengths and weaknesses, the impact of the facility design on education, and future needs. After the presentation, parents and the community will have an opportunity to respond to the architects’ findings.

As we begin to prepare for the 2008-2009 school year, we have several transition activities planned. We will welcome new kindergarten students during our Kindergarten Round-Up on May 21st. Students spend a little time in a kindergarten classroom with current students acting as their buddies. Parents have the opportunity to watch a slide show on the kindergarten year, and ask any questions they may have. Kindergarten students are always excited on their step-up day as they meet the first grade teachers and have lunch in the cafeteria! This year they will visit first grade classrooms on May 14th. On May 22nd our current second grade students will host our current first graders.

As we prepare our young students for the next grade level, we also prepare to transition our fifth graders to middle school. They will have an opportunity on May 6th to tour Wredling, meet teachers and Mrs. Dockum, the principal. On May 15th, these students will participate in a culminating activity through their Too Good for Drugs program. Families are welcome to come and listen to the reflections of the class of 2008.

April is the time to celebrate all the people that volunteer their time to make Fox Ridge a great place. We have a wonderful group of LRC help, PTO volunteers, After School Enrichment teachers, decorators, AVIC, and Parent Academy and fluency tutors that are greatly appreciated. The efforts of all these people help to ensure that every student has an opportunity to experience a variety of activities. We will be celebrating their dedication during Volunteer Week at the end of April.

Although valuable time is spent during these last few months talking and preparing for the next school year, be sure to reflect on all of the successes of this year with your student. Help them continue to focus on their learning as there are many weeks of exciting learning opportunities left before the end of the year. Together we can help our students prepare for the transitions ahead with a positive outlook. Enjoy the improving weather outside, and we’ll look forward to seeing you at our activities inside!

Sincerely,

Anne Van Zandt
