Learning Resource Center

The mission of the Learning Resource Center program is to provide students and staff with quality resources, guided access to information, instruction that supports and enhances curriculum and to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning.

Volunteers

Volunteers are an integral part of a productive, successful LRC program. They offer support in assisting students, shelving books, repairing materials, creating displays and working the Book Fair.
Volunteers are always welcome.

Checking Out Materials

Books, fiction and non-fiction, along with a selection of children’s magazines are available to students for a two week loan period.

Students in grades 2-5 may have three items checked out at one time.
First graders check out two items.
Kindergarteners check out one item.

Materials are checked out during LRC class time. Students may also come independently on a daily basis depending on their classroom schedule if they return their books before their scheduled LRC time.

LRC Classes

Grades 4 & 5 come to the LRC every other week for lessons in information literacy. They receive instruction in library skills, research techniques, both print and electronic, and receive book talks on classic and new literature. The LRC promotes and supports the Rebecca Caudill Reading Award program by purchasing the nominees each year and encouraging the students to read and vote for their favorite.

Basic computer instruction is part of the LRC curriculum, introducing word processing, multimedia presentation programs and keyboarding skills.

Grades K-3 come to the LRC every week for a story and/or computer lesson. Students learn to enjoy stories in various formats - print, spoken, electronic. Reading is promoted in the lower elementary grades through programs such as the Illinois Children’s Choice Monarch Reading Award Program. Every child votes in this program from a list of 20 titles for their favorite book.

Kindergarteners and 1st graders become familiar with the library and are encouraged to choose books independently.
Second and third graders work hard on finding that just right book that will ensure reading success and help prepare them for research using non-fiction books.
