 Gifted Magnet Middle School FAQs

The creation of a Gifted Magnet Middle School program is a response to one of the recommendations developed by community members during the Summit 303 process. Below are some frequently asked questions regarding the Gifted Magnet Middle School program.

Where is the Infinity Gifted Magnet Middle School Program located?
Wredling Middle School

What students are eligible to be considered for Infinity?
The top 2-3% of middle school students district-wide are eligible.

How are the top 2-3% determined?
The top 2-3% will be determined by the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) and a content-based test.  A writing and/or problem-solving sample will be assessed, and an interview may be required.

What gifted programming will be offered?
The offerings include four programs:  Literacy, Social Studies, Math, and Science.

Does Infinity replace the already existing gifted programming in math and literacy in all three middle schools?
No.  All three middle schools will maintain programming for gifted students in math and literacy.  The Gifted Magnet is an additional program offered to district students in the top 2-3%.

What is the maximum size of an Infinity classroom?
There is room to accommodate up to 25 students per class at each grade level.

What will students enrolled in Infinity do for physical education and exploratory courses?
Students will attend P.E. and exploratory classes with other students at Wredling Middle School.

What about extracurricular activities such as clubs and athletics?
Students taking part in the program are encouraged to participate in Wredling Middle School's after school programs.  Students are subject to the same rules and guidelines for participation in extracurricular activities as all Wredling Middle School students.  They can (and we hope they do) take advantage of the many opportunities offered to all students at Wredling Middle School.

Are there appeals to enter Infinity?
We are implementing the same appeals process that is currently used for gifted students
K-12.  The window for the appeals process will be determined during 3rd quarter.  We strongly recommend that a portfolio of current work, demonstrating exceptional work in Math, Science, Literacy, and Social Studies be started as soon as possible.

How long must I be willing to commit to the Infinity program?
For first-time enrollment, we are asking that parents be willing to enroll their child for one full school year.  The amount of time is necessary to become fully acclimated to numerous changes simultaneously (i.e., middle school, environment, social and emotional changes, etc.)  Early withdrawal will be considered for extreme circumstances.

How do I express my interest in Infinity for my student or get additional questions answered?
