Enrollment Projections - Summary of Methods and Findings (presented at Board of Education regular meeting January 12, 2009)

On January 29, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. the Board of Education will again meet in special session at the Charlestowne Mall to further deliberate on the Summit 303 recommendations and potentially take action.

Summit 303 Recommendations Presented to Board of Education

Co-Chairs Jim Keller and Sherry Schmidt presented the final recommendations of Summit 303 to the Board of Education at their December 8, 2008 meeting.  Included within their report are the survey results from the November 19, 2008 Summit 303 meeting.  Click here for the report and survey results.

Two special meetings of the Board of Education have been scheduled to discuss and potentially take action on the Summit 303 recommendations.  Tuesday, January 20 and Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.  Both open meetings will be held at the Charlestowne Mall meeting room.  Enter by the lower level theater entrance.

Summit 303 - Next Steps

On November 19th at what proved to be the final meeting of Summit 303 approximately 500 residents, staff, and students reaffirmed the Summit consensus on facility improvements, all day kindergarten, and class size.

After a summary presentation of the year long process by co-chairs Jim Keller and Sherry Schmidt, and a summary of the consensus points of Summit 303 by Superintendent Donald Schlomann, each individual at the meeting used 3 colored dots to indicate their preferences. Overall, attendees would like to see:

  • Both the elementary and secondary school improvements completed
  • All day kindergarten provided as an option in the district with the additional ½ day cost the responsibility of parents choosing that option
  • A reduction in K-3 class sizes gradually as enrollments, space, and budget allow.

What’s next? The Board of Education will be presented with the Summit 303 recommendations at their regular meeting on Monday, December 8 at 7:00 p.m. The Improvement Strategies Survey of additional priority items completed at Wednesday’s meeting will be tabulated and the District will be completing a random sampling phone survey of registered voters in early January. The Board will be meeting in two special January sessions, dates to be determined, to review all results and potentially take action on the Summit 303 recommendations at the last January meeting.

Survey results and dates for the Board meetings will be posted here when available.

The weather was crisp and cold but the spirit of volunteerism provided the warmth as over 200 District 303 residents, parents, students, staff and administrators gathered early in

the morning of November 15 for the Summit 303 Walkabout.  The volunteers met at Thompson Middle School to get their materials and instructions before fanning out all over District 303 to invite residents to the November 19 Summit 303 meeting. By noon the volunteers returned to Thompson to enjoy a well-deserved (and needed!) hot lunch.

The accompanying photos are scenes from an event that informed area residents of the meeting and gave all the volunteers a chance to visit with their neighbors on a beautiful fall day.
